Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in Anaheim

man holding wrist in painNumb fingers at night. Tingling while you’re typing or holding your phone. A grip that doesn’t feel quite as reliable as it used to. Carpal tunnel symptoms can make everyday tasks frustrating, especially when your job depends on your hands.

At Majer Chiropractic Wellness Center, the evaluation doesn’t stop at the wrist. Dr. Gerald Majer, D.C. also considers the neck, posture, and demands of your work.

Why We Look Beyond the Wrist

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. Because the nerve originates from the neck and travels down the arm, symptoms warrant a broader assessment.

One concept our chiropractor considers is double crush syndrome, in which a nerve may be affected at more than one location. This is one reason he evaluates the neck and upper body along with the wrist rather than assuming every case begins and ends at the hand.

Repetitive Work Can Add Up

Symptoms often develop gradually. Our doctor has extensive experience evaluating workplace biomechanics and is accredited in the Backsafe® workplace injury prevention program.

For Anaheim workers at registers, in warehouses, or behind a keyboard, he may look at factors such as:

  • Repetitive gripping, typing, or scanning
  • Long periods in one position
  • Wrist position during work
  • Head and shoulder posture
  • Work habits and opportunities for breaks

He encourages workers to think of preparing for a physical job much like preparing for a sport. A brief warm-up, movement after a lunch break, and short microbreaks during repetitive work may help reduce physical strain.

Know the Early Signs

Carpal tunnel symptoms commonly include numbness, tingling, or discomfort in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Symptoms may be more noticeable at night or while performing repetitive tasks. Some people also notice hand weakness or difficulty gripping objects.

Persistent numbness, tingling, or weakness deserves an evaluation rather than simply shaking out your hand and carrying on.

Looking at the Neck, Posture, and Wrist

Your evaluation may include your wrist, neck, upper back, posture, and work habits. The goal is to identify findings that may be relevant to your symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care is an appropriate option.

When indicated, care may include chiropractic adjustments along with stretches, exercises, and ergonomic recommendations for work.

Patients who continue to have symptoms after carpal tunnel release surgery may also be assessed. Previous surgery doesn’t automatically mean chiropractic care is the right next step, so recommendations depend on the individual examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would my chiropractor look at my neck when my hand is numb?

The nerves supplying the hand originate higher in the nervous system and travel through the neck and arm before reaching the hand. Examining the neck can help determine whether another area may be relevant to your symptoms.

Can I be evaluated if I’ve already had carpal tunnel surgery?

Yes. If symptoms remain after surgery, an examination can look at the wrist as well as the neck, posture, and other factors that may warrant attention.
